Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Taxation Beginnerवस्तु एवं सेवा कर
परिभाषा
GST is a unified indirect tax that replaced multiple Central and state taxes (excise, VAT, service tax, etc.) from July 2017. Following the GST 2.0 overhaul agreed at the 56th GST Council meeting and effective 22 September 2025, it has two main slabs — 5% and 18% — alongside a nil rate for exempt items and a 40% rate on luxury and sin goods such as tobacco, aerated drinks, large motorcycles and luxury cars. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were withdrawn, with most 12% items moving to 5% and most 28% items to 18%. GST is collected at each stage of the supply chain but credit is available for tax paid at earlier stages, ensuring tax is only on value addition. CGST goes to the Centre, SGST to states, and IGST on inter-state transactions is split.

GST is the backbone of indirect tax revenue, with monthly gross collections running well above Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The September 2025 rate overhaul cut rates on a wide range of goods, so collections in 2025-26 reflect a lower average rate on a broader base.
